Like any IWA student, I arose from my unbelievably comfortable bed to the unbearably uncomfortable reality: summer was over, school was about to go into high gear, and it was only 6:30 am. Soon, though, once dressed in that red vest, and the plaid skirt in place, I felt excited. I felt ready to go.
Upon getting to school, it was all the same happy, smiling faces (plus some! the freshmen) that I've come to identify as uniquely Incarnate Wordian. The bell rang, the shoes clopped up the stairs (side note: I always love looking at shoes that have been purchased over the summer. Especially when class gets a little long, it's nice to go around the lower level of the room and see how a friend's personality is expressed through her shoes.) It's always exciting for everyone to discover their new home away from home for the year: their locker.
Mass was a nice way to reconnect to the spirit of the school. I appreciated the priest's advise to realize our "inner eagle". Next, meeting the teachers, old and new. Looks like this year will be just as tough as last, but even more fun. Fun because the courses themselves look interesting, fun because of all the friends, fun because of the teachers, who all look really enthusiastic.
Then, the Big Sis, Lil Sis activities. The challenges they assigned us were hair-pullingly tricky (an example: with about 30 seniors and 30 freshmen on each side of the gym, line up single file in order of birthday...yes, that includes the year and the day!) The Class of 2012 are a great group. They seem like a self-confident class, and very friendly and fun-loving. And, needless to say everybody was loving the ice cream we got at the end of the day.
All and all, the first day of school has not even officially come. That'll be Monday, when class instruction begins. But on Friday, it was more of a reconnecting opportunity... a chance to reconnect with friends, with teachers, and with the building itself. That way, Monday, the first official day of "school",will just feel natural, an art IWA achieves like no other.
Signing off for now,
Bianca
